Morgan Newton, Carmel’s 6’5”, 220-pound quarterback, has been named the Indianapolis Star Indiana Mr. Football. Newton earned 34 of 52 votes from the rating board of the Indiana Football Coaches Association, outdueling runner-up Nick Zachery of Sheridan (10 votes).
The University of Kentucky recruit (he’ll study business in Lexington) appeared in the last three Class 5A state championship games, leading the Greyhounds to the title in 2007. Newton passed for 1,938 yards and 22 touchdowns this season while rushing for 1,664 yards and 26 more touchdowns.
And he excelled in the big games, averaging a combined 280 yards and nearly three touchdowns per contest against a half-dozen of the state’s best schools: Indianapolis Cathedral, Center Grove, Warren Central, Ben Davis, Fort Wayne Snider, Penn, and Center Grove again in the 5A state finals.
“To me, that’s pretty impressive in big-time games,” Carmel coach Mo Moriarity told the Star. “Even including Rex (Grossman, the Chicago Bears backup QB whom Moriarity coached to a state title at Bloomington South), I’ve never had a kid who could just take over a game, whether it’s running or throwing, like (Newton) does.
“He’s unbelievable.”
Newton is the son of former North Central (Indianapolis) and Grambling fullback John Newton, a Carmel assistant principal for 11 years. His dad said he’s been a “Mr. Everything” at sports since he was little.
“From the time we put him on the field, he was the leading scorer and played great defense,” John Newton, who oftentimes coached his son’s youth teams, told the Star. “You could see that his hand-eye coordination was just unbelievable, and he’d just do whatever he wanted to do.
“Basketball was the same thing. He’d take the ball right down the floor and score. Football the same way. Baseball, he’d make catches over his head that would make the highlight reel.”
HoosierAuthority.com congratulates Morgan, thanks him for the outstanding gridiron memories, and wishes him the best of luck at Kentucky and beyond.
